Food Cravings

For example, carbohydrate cravings commonly reported by dieters may be due to a diet too low in calories, and your blood sugar levels are too low. Dieters treat to the calculation of calories very captiously. They end up getting most of their calories from fat; therefore, the carbohydrate portion of their diets is too low.

The same way, carbohydrate cravings experienced by heavy exercisers could result from depletion of glycogen stores, which carbohydrates fill.

Most people do not crave just carbohydrates; very few want potatoes, pasta or bread. Most want some sweet and high-fat food.

Very often parents reward their children with tasty foods for good behavior or when they want to calm down their child. Such practice usually begins in childhood and continues throughout adult life.

The deprivation of dieting can also cause cravings for certain foods. For example, if person follows diet that prohibits rich, high-calorie foods, dieter will frequently experience the overwhelming desires for these foods. Unable to resist this temptation, they usually give in to their cravings. And once they give in, they frequently overindulge.

How we choose food for eating is a complex issue. Except the fundamental hunger factor, there are some other important physiological factors such as taste of food, its texture, aroma, color and temperature.

It is still unclear whether any congenital wisdom of the human body plays a major role in determining our food choices. But our associations with food obviously do have great influence.

Ignoring these influences, as is often happens in the days of emotions, may set people up for aberrant eating behaviors, such as food cravings that result in bingeing. When people try to avoid certain foods totally, finally they tend to overeat them.

The best solution of this problem is to eat all foods in moderation within the context of a well-balanced diet.

In the final analysis, whether future research shows food cravings are physiologically-based or psychologically-based or both, blaming the specific foods for our own choices may be a mistake.
